Two pine trees growing close together share more than just light and wind. Beneath the ground, their roots are connected through fine fungal threads—a network called mycorrhiza. Through this system, they can send nutrients and water to one another, especially if one of them is under stress from drought or shade. The resin they produce is not only an individual defense—the trees can also send chemical signals via roots and fungi that warn their neighbor of insect attacks.

Although pine trees are not as “social” as beeches, there are documented cases in which they maintain a form of partnership. They adapt their growth so that their branches do not suffocate each other in the competition for light. In storms and drought, two pine trees that have grown side by side can support one another—quite literally—through a shared root network that provides stability and collective resilience.
