Den Sidste Original

(The last Original)

Since 2008, I have worked as a professional fantasy illustrator, creating artwork for around 300 books—from timeless classics and children’s literature to educational materials, historical depictions, board games, and much more. I have collaborated with nearly every major Danish publisher and had the pleasure of contributing to a wide variety of genres and projects.

In the early years of my career, I mainly worked digitally, but today I focus on traditional media such as oil paint, gouache, ink, and pencil whenever possible. Working by hand brings a depth, texture, and presence that I increasingly value—both in my creative process and in the finished artwork.

The world is changing, not least with the rise of artificial intelligence. For me as an illustrator, it is more important than ever to stand by what is original and unique. My work is, and always will be, rooted in craftsmanship and authenticity.

Highlights of my career include my collaboration with author Kenneth Bøgh Andersen on his retellings of Frankenstein, Dracula, and Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, as well as illustrating a board game for the National Museum of Denmark based on Vølvens Spådom—a reimagining of Norse mythology where illustration and storytelling go hand in hand.

Before entering the world of book illustration, I worked in animation in Germany and France, and later with DreamWorks in Canada. I also took part in major productions such as Asterix and the Vikings for Danish studio A-Film.

Alongside illustration, nature has always been a profound source of inspiration for me. Painting landscapes—both out in the field and in my studio—connects me deeply to the rhythms of the natural world. Nearly 20 years ago, I fell in love with Norddjurs, and that love only grows stronger. Though I have traveled the world, I continue to find inspiration and adventure right here in the forests and coastlines of this remarkable region.

The images I create arise from a lifelong sense that the boundary between nature and fantasy is very thin. When I look at the moss on a forest floor or the branches of an old tree, I imagine hidden worlds—trolls rumbling through the woods, unseen creatures gliding on the back of a raven, or tiny beings carrying out their secret lives.

For me, fantasy is a celebration of nature. It allows imagination to live freely, no matter where we are in life. Nature heals and restores, but it also holds countless mysteries—and as far as I know, no one has ever proven that elves, trolls, or sprites do not exist. Until then, I’ll keep painting them into life.

Now based at Bønnerup Harbour, I look forward to sharing my work, creating new stories, and bringing a touch of magic and adventure to both children and adults alike.

How I work and what to expect.

All commissioned illustrations are created under clear agreements regarding copyright and usage rights. As the artist, I always retain the original copyright to my work, while clients are granted specific usage rights through a contract.

I offer two main models:

  • One-time fee: A single payment that covers all digital rights and editions across platforms and formats. The fee must be set at a level that embraces the freedom it grants, ensuring fair compensation for the broad scope of use. This model provides clients with full flexibility for both current and future digital use.

  • Separate contracts: Alternatively, usage rights can be licensed individually for specific media such as digital editions, special editions, audio versions, and merchandise. This model ensures that the scope of use is clearly defined and adapted to each project.

In every project, I collaborate closely with the client to ensure that the illustration captures the essence of the text and enhances the overall work. Each agreement is tailored to the client’s needs while safeguarding the integrity and originality of the artwork.
