The Silent Conversation of Trees – Nature’s Invisible Network
Trees communicate with one another, but not with voices we can hear. They communicate through a complex network beneath the ground—their roots are connected via fungi called mycorrhiza, which function as the forest’s internet. Through this network, trees send signals to each other: warnings about dangers such as insect attacks, help in the form of nutrients and water to trees in need, and even messages that coordinate growth and defense.
Above ground, trees also release chemical signals into the air—leaves can emit substances that warn neighboring trees of attacks or attract insects that prey on harmful pests.
This invisible communication creates a community in which trees not only compete, but also cooperate, helping one another and creating a stronger, healthier forest.
